Damp Proofing

If your walls are visibly wet or discoloured, you have a moisture problem that needs treatment

Rising damp and condensation are common problems in all types of building, the latter, even in more modern buildings.

Condensation is particularly problematic due to modern lifestyles – our homes are better sealed, with well-fitting windows and doors and few draughts.  However, we produce a lot of moisture  everyday through washing, showering, bathing etc.  With no way to escape this condenses, leaving wet surfaces where mould and mildew thrive.

Rising Damp is caused by a lack of an adequate damp proof course or bridging of an existing damp course, where porous bricks and masonry absorb moisture from the ground by capillary action.  The most obvious indication of a rising damp problem is a tidemark on the walls, coupled with spoiled, stained plaster and peeling wallpaper.

Where rising dampness has been identified we can help you with a range of damp proofing treatments:

Chemical injection

This fast, clean and effective damp proofing treatment is water-based and soluble, so it quickly diffuses into your brickwork to create an evenly distributed, water repellent layer.

Although the layer itself is water repellent, to stop moisture from rising up from the ground, it is permeable to water vapour, so your walls can still dry out naturally.

Injection cream

This quick and simple damp proofing course can be achieved without the need for power tools.  The cream is injected into a series of pre-drilled holes, where it diffuses to create a water repellent resin.

Injection cream is ecologically safe and non-hazardous, with a low solvent content.

Re-plastering

When dampness rises from the ground it may bring with it various salts that occur naturally in the ground. The significance of these salts is that if they are hygroscopic they can absorb moisture from the atmosphere, leading to persistent dampness on the plaster surface. Salting can often cause breakdown to render and plaster.

This problem is resolved by removing the damaged plaster and re-plastering with a specialist, salt-retardant render.
